Revue Cinema: a Non-profit, Volunteer Run Website
The Revue Cinema is a community movie theatre that had been one of the oldest continuously running movie theatres in the country when it was closed by its owners in 2006. A non-profit community group sprang up to bring it back and in 2007, it re-opened and has been thriving since then. A site using Drupal was created, and in July 2008 I began working with them as their Drupal support.
It turned out that the volunteer model had kept them afloat, but the website was a bit of a minefield. I moved the hosting to my server, switched their mail over to google apps, removed a plethora of unused modules and updated the remaining ones with their latest security patches.
In fact, their volunteers were doing a remarkable job keeping the site looking good in spite of all this, but it was hard work for them (with big kudos to Jason Crowtz). My first fix was to add some automation to the way they entered and displayed their upcoming films, which involved writing a custom module to manage the posting of multiple screen times at a go, a problem that turns out to be similar to one that others have.
For the future, I'm looking at implementing CiviCRM for them, and also adding more automation to their website to enable the volunteers who provide the content, reviews, etc. to post their stuff directly.
